My parents always did this when i was a little girl. On Dec. 5th i would hang my stocking and st. nick would come and if you were nice you got some goodies but if you have been naughty you got coal or dirty hairbrushes. And if you were naughty you had the chance to start being good so you would get gifts for christmas.
My dads family did it as well, and almost everyone in my catholic school got stuff too! But outside of my family and catholic school friends i have never heard anyone else doing this!

I do something similar. The kids stockings were packed with candy and trinkets. If my son was a turd, I would put "can goods" in his stocking. He was funny lil guy and would tell everyone if your not good Santa give you can goods. He was very serious. Its one of his favorite memories and he says he will do it when he has kids some day. Oh and I would end up giving him his true stocking stuff
i did it when i lived in belguim when i was 8. but we left out our shoe and a beer for st. nick ( its the thin santa kinda) and a carrot for his donkey... that what kids do in belguim so if it seems off to you that just how they do it... it was fun
oh my god we used to do that growing up except we would put our shoes out and our shoes would be filled with googies. lol it was soo much fun!!! I used to put out my biggest boot!!! my dad was born and raised in england so it came from him.
