At what age do babies use utensils?

I know all kids are different but is there a time when you should start? DD is 11 months. I have been giving her a spoon with some of her food but she likes to use it to fling food at the cats lol. I'm not going to push her. I'm hoping she gets the idea soon because she has a tendency to sometimes to rub her eyes when she eats and gets food in them. I wipe her hands like 100x during each meal.

My son didn't master the spoon and fork until about 16 months. Before that most of the food went everywhere else but in his mouth from the spoon. Girls tend to learn sooner I've herd! My son still uses his hands for a LOT of his food though drives me insane. My 9 month old, just chews on the spoon nothing ever gets on it to even try to make it to his mouth lol

It will be different with each kid. My DDs started at diff times. My oldest was about 8-9 mos when we started giving her one and she had it down by about 11 months. And my youngest was about 9-10 months when we started and had it down by the time she was 1. It takes a while but she will get it. Good luck!!

My DD is 2 and is really just now starting to actually use the utensils. Even still though as soon as she gets frustrated she reverts to hands. Im not worried.

I think DS started around 9-10 months. By 1 he was a pro.

I couldn't help but laugh when I read the part about your DD flinging the food at the cat. That sounds like something DS would do. I'd say just keep trying, she will get it. Let her use it for things that are easy to pick up, like yogurt, apple sauce, potatoes.

Sean is 13 months and he can sort of use a fork. He tries to feed himself cereal with a spoon (obviously LOL) but he puts the spoon upside down and milk just drips everywhere and its just a big mess. But things that he eats with a fork he is good with if I help him to put it on the fork. I put it on for him and give him the fork and he puts it in his mouth and gives me the fork back. Sometimes he tries to get it on himself and it just flings everywhere, sometimes he lucks out and gets it on. He gets the concept, but not always the food LOL.

My son (now 23 months) didn't really use utensils until he was close to 18 months.  He demanded utensils by 14 months or so but didn't do more than play with them for quite a long time - used his hands for the actual eating.  He's pretty good with pieces of things but soupy meals defy him.  :-)

i baby sat a girl who was ok with a spoon at 1 year old. my DD is 6 almost 7 months and she kinda uses a spoon. i scoop the food onto it, she takes the spoon gets the food and spoon into her mouth and eats all the food off of it, and when she has licked it clean she drops the spoon onto her tray or onto the floor...so we are almost there lol.

Yes the other day she dumped a bowl of pasta on top of the cat lol. She has also been biting her fingers and yelling when she eats, she shoves like her whole hand in her mouth. She just got 3 top teeth in within a week and they are SHARP!

She usually turns the spoon, or spork upside down and watches the food drip off then she licks it.

My girls were the same as yours!  My oldest was VERY adament about doing things on her own even at a young age...I figured "Eh, why not?"  She loved it and had it down real quick.  My youngest didn't (and still doesn't) care either way.
