Every year I go out and buy my mom a really nice gift, usually in electronics or I give her a gift card/cash in a card for Christmas. The electronics I get her usually get used for a couple months and than thrown into a closet or storage... movies get watched once maybe twice... and well cash/gift cards just scream I was too lazy to go shopping for you so you have to do it yourself...
well I went over to my moms house today and while there something caught my eye... something I haven't seen in YEARS!! When I was in elementary school we made these nutcrackers out of construction paper and glitter... it was really cute and surprisingly held up over the years (I think I was in like 6th grade). So I commented to my mom that she still had that old thing hanging around the house and was poking fun at her.. her reply kinda shocked me when she said she loved keeping the things I made for her because it was made JUST FOR HER... yeah, a small mushy moment and I felt really good knowing that she loved how I made something for her and after all these years, she would still have it.
Well tonight, I was at walmart and got to thinking about my moms sweet words and decided to make her something for christmas this year instead of buying it. So I got this wooden block from the crafts section.. looks almost like an 8X10 photo frame cept its all wood. Than i got these wooden letters that say MOM... some small fake roses and had a few pictures that were taken over the coarse of the year and decided I would make her an unconventional photo collage. I painted the letters, hot glued the roses and will soon be adding the pictures onto it. My concern is, does the idea sound kind of cheap? I know its cheesy but theres no amount of money I can spend on a present that will completley AWE my mom, so I figured the best thing I can do is give her my time. To give her again something I haven't given her in YEARS since I was a little girl... a handmade gift. What are your thoughts on it? You can be totally honest and I will accept it... but I'm still giving it to her lol.
aww I think its very sweet! And I bet she will love it!!!
Sounds like a wonderful idea.....I would cherish something like that where someone had taken the time to make it for me.....Definitely a winner.....Sure she will love it.
okay dont laugh but you totally made me cry, i was at my moms house tonight and i saw the little pilgrims me and my sister made for her when we were like 7yrs old. she had them hanging on her wall. i know those are the gifts that mean the most to us as moms. i love it when my daughter brings me home something from school that she made just for her mommy. i cherish it. i dont think it is cheap at all. it is amazing. i love the idea so much.

I LOVE the idea! I do homemade gifts for my mom every year. Every once in a while there will be specific things she wants, but for the most part she always tells me she doesn't want "stuff." So I make things with my boys for her. The first Christmas after my second on was born I did a plaster frame with the baby's handprint inside my older son's handprint and a picture of the two of them. For Mother's day one year I painted hearts on my boys thumbs and they put thumbprint hearts on charms. I turned it into a bracelet. I would LOVE it if I got something like what you described form my boys once they were older!!
the best gifts you can give a parent is something from the heart i gave my mom money before expensive gifts etc nothing has ever made her as happy as something i put work into so i made her a scrap book like a year or two ago she absolutely loved it i made it around me her and my brother from the time we were kids to now she was so so so happy she cried looking at it soi think your gift will be perfect
WOW I wasn't expecting such a positive reaction to this but I'm glad you ladies like the idea. Like I said, this will be my first homemade gift to my mom since I was a little girl. So far, I'm very pleased with how well its turning out and the only thing left to do is put pictures on them. I hope it turns out as good as I want :) Thanks for the compliments ladies
I think it's awesome that your mom kept that all these years, I have to admit to my disappointment that my mom never kept anything I made.
I think your idea is a fantastic one. this year $$ is tight because I got laid off in July - the girls and I will be making snow globes for everyone - upside down glass baby food jars with a ribbon around the side of the lid, mineral oil, glitter and maybe some snowflake shaped sequins... I'm not sure what we'll be putting inside them, but would like to figure out a way to laminate our holiday pic this year and make that the focus. if I can't make that work then maybe I'll do a few tiny plaster figurines that I can paint to represent the kids. I may also paint custom frames for everyone and put our holiday pic in that. since I'm currently jobless, I have a bit more time on my hands for something like that.
so a snowglobe, maybe a pic in a frame, and probably something homebaked (banana bread, pumpkin bars, etc.) based on the tastes of the recipients is going to be what the kids and I will be gifting. Michael's and the grocery store are getting my Christmas money this year!
