So we're supposed to be riding with my in-laws to their families house in the next state over to have Thanksgiving Dinner. I've been watching the news and it's supposed to snow while we're there, or possibly while we're on our way.

To make things worse, I have a serious interstate phobia. Because of my dad being the crazy drunken driving father that he is, and what he would do when we were little, which was get drunk and drive us on the interstate to some random place in the middle of the night or day... ughh..

The interstates and highways scare the life out of me, and have forced me into panic attacks before. I really don't know what to do. I don't completely trust anyone who drives other than myself (and I DO NOT drive on the interstate).I'm also worried about my daughter being a distarction to my mother in law.  I've riddin in the car once when she was distracted and she ended up driving down the center of a 2 lane city street.

Also... and this might hit the wrong spot with some people, but believe me, I'm only adding because of the serious fear of crashing and burning on the interstate, my mother inlaw, brother in law and sister in law are BIG. I mean they are really really big. And they're all going to be in the car (well van) when we go. If it starts to snow and it gets icey.. I'm worried about sliding, and possibly flipping... I know, it's something I seriously need to get over, but I can't.

I don't know what to do now... The alignment on our car is messed up and hubby doesn't want to drive it all the way to Illinois, and let alone in the snow.

Any advice?

Also I added a poll, just to see who would or wouldn't still travel if they knew about a heavy snow coming....

I live in Colorado so yes we travel with snow all winter long but if you don't feel comfortable no one would blame you for not wanting to risk it!! Especially with your panic attacks!

I would make tentative plans to go.  Then based on the weather reports the day of travel adjust my plans accordingly.

I would not go.....I have a serious problem with anyone driving but me, in the rain, and we are in texas, I would freak if i tried to drive in the snow, because a) i have never driven in the snow b) if people arent use to snow they drive freaking crazy, and not carefully. I was in a horrid accdient 3 years ago, and lost a baby i was pregnant with, I was driving, but i hit a deer. I wont go anywhere unless i drive

i would not go. if it were me i would say that i am not dragging my child through the snow on the icy road for Thanksgiving. Just go out now and buy that fixing for your own turkey dinner and make it at home. Good luck.

Personally I would go, but I am not you.

We have traveled through 2 storms, from NJ, to Illinois (where my family is)

The trip is 16 hours (give or take).

Last year we pulled our kids out of school early, hoping to miss the storm...we didn't. We hit the tail end of an ice storm, the last hour of the trip took 12.  (yes 12 hours)  We took it, VERY slow, and steady, and sat at an exit ramp for 4 hours (tractor trailer crash).

The other time we hit a storm, we hit snow in ohio, and the interstate ended up being closed we sat on the interstate for 9 hours, not moving.

Honestly, it was fine, would I plan that...NEVER.  But, we have done it twice.

But, with all that being said, we would try to plan around the storm if we knew it was coming.  Like last year we tried to beat it, and thought we would...we didn't.  The first year, we were just dummys and didn't check the weather, and had no idea there was a BLIZZARD in ohio!  We learned to check the weather!

I say no but I've also only driven in snow once in my life! (Grew up in FL and now live in AZ.  Drove in snow when we visited the Grand Canyon last year :)) that would be WAY to scary for me!

Yes we CAN and Yes we DID!!!!

I love the snow..I just hate driving in it..and won't do it..I grew up in Oregon, and live in Arizona now, so snow isn't a big issue. But I have a huge phobia of driving in it, due to a car accident when i was 11. I probably would travel..being it an interstate, there are no mountains to go off of..and if there isn't any hills..if its just flat, i wouldnt mind. If your child is going to be a distraction, maybe bring a portable dvd player to keep her entertained or something. Good luck!
