So I'm thinking about getting a puppy....but.....
Ok, I will say first that I am in LOVE with Chihuahuas....I don't care that people say they are ugly, they are adorable to me! : ) I had 2 in the past. The first one was mixed with Pomeranian and was very mean! I gave to a home with no kids after he repeatedly bit my daughter. A couple years later I got another who was mixed with a Terrier. He was very hyper but I loved him dearly. He ended up dying from siezures : ( It has been awhile (a few years). I am in a home (not a trailer like I was), we have another dog, a Beagle who we love very much. But I came across an ad for a Chihuahua that needs a home and it's a very low cost. And it's a teacup which is my very favorite of the breed! I'm very excited.....now here's the drawback......SO and I have been together for over 11 years but didn't live together for most of those years. He hated my dog (the one that died). He hates chihuahuas (ankle biters he calls them) and hates little dogs that yipe. Don't get me wrong, he's not mean to them, he just doesn't like them. But I want this little one anyway! If I ask him he will say no way. If I just go and get it he will be mad but he'll get over it sooner or later. I plan to take full responsibility for the puppy, not asking him at all, and I feel like this is the time to get it since it's such a low cost and we have a little extra money right now. I want a lap-dog....like I said, I love my Beagle but she is not a lap dog! She runs the yard and kills birds and hunts and all that. SO plays with her more than I do and sleeps with her more than I do. So my cousin and I were talking about it and she came up with this....my birthday was Sunday....I go get the dog and bring it to her house. When she knows I'm home (and SO is home!) she will bring him over to me right in front of SO and say "Happy Birthday, look what I got you!!!!!!!" There will be no way he can refuse me getting a gift : ) Ok very devious I know!!! But I want this dog so much and he'll say no if I just ask so what do you guys think?
By the way, for all of the animal activists out there.....no he doesn't come from a shelter but I would be saving him from going to a shelter if the owner can't find a home for him by this weekend! And yes, he is up to date on shots and yes I would get him fixed if he isn't already (that is one question I forgot to ask the owner).
i am not a fan of the short haired Chihuahuas but i like the long haired ones though i am a big dog person. If you do get this puppy take the time to train and socialize him so that he does not fall into the breed stereotype so that your SO does not have anythign to complain about. If this was me i truthfully just bring the animal home but then i work at a vet and my husband is used to me bringing them home to foster or for keeps. I think you and your sister came up with a good plan but i also think you need to be honest and talk to him about this.
Believe me, I would feel guilty not telling him the truth but I bet I'd get over it after a couple of days of looking at those cute little bugged out eyes LOLOL No really, I would feel bad but if I want it and I plan to take care of it then I'm thinking that he should deal with it......I am a SAHM so I'm home all day every day to take care of it, just like I do the Beagle we have.....just looking for some opinions : )
Listen, I am going to be honest and say it's not a good idea to lie to your SO. It always comes back to bite you in the ass. I have wanted to get a second dog since I got Giles 10 years ago. he is the type of dog that would love a playmate. But Dh was?is against it. It crossed my mind to pretend I found a dog, but I cannot stomach being dishonest to that extent.
