Food Stamp Opinion Question

Say you're being nosy at the grocery store, and you see someone whip out a food stamp card to buy what look like some decent stuff - meat in bulk, some fruits, veggies, blah, blah, blah. But they also have a case of Pepsi, some Cheetos, Doritos, and Oreos. They're pretty chatty with the cashier, and are telling them how they spend about $600 on groceries in a month, but they only receive $300 in FS. Food stamps for them come in on the 6th - and it's conveniently the 7th. They tell the cashier how they spend the FS now, because rent is due, and there's hardly anything left over...and when the mid-month check comes in, they use their own debit card...but they buy the same stuff. Are you all judgemental? Saying that they shouldn't be buying all that crap? Because they're using your taxpayer money THIS time?

Is it any different if you happen to be behind them in line again on the 20th? When they've got the same cart of food...but they're paying with their bank card?

With all the FS posts, it seems like people actually think this way...so I'm curious - what's your opinion? Is it okay to think of your food stamp card as part of your monthly grocery budget...or should it be separated out, so that you only pay for junk food out of your bank account?

I pay for all my groceries with my foodstamps.  Junk and all.

i honestly don't know much about FS...just WIC.  so i don't judge.  if i were in that position, i would hate to never be allowed to drink pepsi because i can't afford bread on my own. kwim?

She's not saying it's all crap. She's saying if they had a bunch of healthy food and some snack foods is it ok? I would say yes. It's their FS and sometimes, treats are nice.

it doesnt matter what they buy with it, as long as it is within the rules of the card. which is any food item except hot food or alcohol. obviously it would be great for ALL families (not just PA) to make healthy food choices, but the point is that they need to learn to budget and make these choices, and if there were strict rules on what you could buy and when, they would never get a chanceto do it for themselves

I really don't care as long as they are paying for it with either foodstamps, cash, or debit/credit card. At least they are not stealing it.

I don't really care. I would rather my tax money goes to feeding families whatever they choose to eat rather than paying for a politicians hooker or something liek that. FS are not draining our tax money it is the goverments poor spending habits on stuid stuff. I live in California btw so that might give you an idea as to where I am coming from.

who cares if they want to put crap in their bodies. It is obviously sustaining life so I dont care.

(by the way, when dealing with the "poor" keep in mind that the only "luxuries" they get usually comes from FOOD. If they want a pepsi and a bag of cheetos I say let em have it.)

I buy thick ass steaks, crab legs, and lobster with my stamp card and I could give a fuck less what anyone says about it. I get junk too, cookies, kit kats and whatever else I want. I make sure that I have fruit veggies and I shop at the meat market for my meats.
