 Remove an Oil-Based Paint Stain
Step 1Clear away any excess paint by scraping or toweling it off. To scrape, use a blunt edged knife or piece of cardboard. Another option is to use a towel to blot the excess away.

Step 2Place a small amount of turpentine on a sponge and blot the paint-stained area. The paint comes out of the fabric and leaves the oily residue of the turpentine solvent behind.

Step 3Add 1 teaspoon mild detergent to 1 cup of lukewarm water and mix.

Step 4Use a clean sponge to blot the previously stained area with the water and detergent mixture to remove the oily solvent residue.

Step 5Rinse the area with clean water.

Remove a Latex-Based Paint Stain
Step 1Scrape away or towel off any excess paint from the stained area. To scrape, use a blunt edged knife or piece of cardboard, or use a towel to blot the excess paint from the area.

Step 2Apply a mild detergent to the stained area if the paint is still wet.

Step 3Scrub the stain with the detergent to remove the wet paint.

Step 4Coat the stained area with hair spray or hand sanitizer if the paint stain is old or dried out.

Step 5Brush the stain with a toothbrush or stiff cleaning brush to remove the dried paint.

Step 6Wash the area with mild detergent and water to remove the hair spray or hand sanitizer.

Step 7Rinse the previously stained area with clean water.
