How do you know if a hard boiled egg is done? I have 5 minutes til the timer goes off!

So mine are done!

But now I'm curious, how does everyone hard boil their eggs? Everyone does it differently, I find it humorous! lol My mom has always put them in the pan, cover with water, wait to boil, then boil them for 18 minutes. I boil water first, use a spoon and gently set them in the pan and boil for 18 minutes. But I did more than I usually do this time and wasn't sure if they would be done.

I've always wondered the same thing. I just cook them for the same time, same temp every time that way I know they are done.

the only way I know of is to open an egg and check the yolk.

for perfect hard boiled eggs, put the eggs in a pan and cover with water.  put on the stove on high heat.  once the water starts boiling, set the timer for 10 minutes.  once the timer goes off, drain the water and fill pan with ice and add water.  once they cool off they are done - every time and without trying to figure out doneness.

good luck!

How long have they been boiling? This is how I do mine, I wait until the water boils, then time them for 2 mins, turn off the burner and cover the pot, set them on a burner that has not been on and leave them covered for 30 mins! They will be done, I promise!

I put them in a pot of cold water, then turn them on.  Once the water is boiling, turn off the pot and cover.  Leave the eggs in there for 15-20 minutes.  I do it like this and they come out perfect.  Never overdone.

LOL, you don't need to do them that long.  We put ours in the pot, then put the water in to cover them, put it on the stove to boil.  Once it starts boiling, we boil them for 10 minutes and they're always done.

To get the shells off easily, drain the hot water out and put the eggs in a strainer, run them under cold water until they're cold.  If you hold them in your hand you should feel no warmth.  Then put them in ice water for a while.  The shells should come off easily when you peel them.
