why wouldnt a hospital let you eat during labor? did you eat during labor?
i just read that in the other post where op is having contractions.....i remember when i was in labor i did not know this.....and i was STARVING. so in the hospital they brought me the dinner food tray and i unknowingly ate all of it. then like 20 min later the nurse comes in and freaks me out ( i have vomit phobia) and she goes "did you just eat?" i was like yes.. and she goes "ooooh noooo man you are going to THROW UP! " i was like "wwwwhy?" and she goes "every one today has been throwing up when they are having contractions and we arent letting them eat...i dont know why they gave you a tray." i was so upset. my family was like 'just ignore her, how rude" (she did sound kind of rude) and in the end i didnt throw up because i had a c section about 18 hours later. even though i did get nauseated from the pitocin. why do some people encourage it and others dont?

They won't let you eat during labor because they plan for you to have a c section and if you are \\isk for infection.
They would not even give me water when I was in the hospital.
When I gave birth at the birthing center, I ate mac n cheese during early labor, then switched to all natural, sugar free fuit juices and fresh fruit later. After I gave birth, we had shepherd's pie.
Nausea is frequent during labor, and they don't want you to throw up.
There is the risk you might have a problem and need a general anesthetic-a no no on a full stomach.
My Ob allowed snacking during labor, but I wasn't really hungry. You could also have ice chips or small sips of sprite, ginger ale, or diluted juices.
I didnt eat because I was nauseaous, but I had a TON of ice chips

hEY! Half of my reply was deleted! Argh!
No, I didn't eat. I was only allowed to have popsicles. As it turns out, my son's heartrate dropped and wouldn't come back up, so I had an emergency c-section. I guess not eating is also a precaution in case you need a c-section, because they never want you to eat before being given anesthesia?

You know I'm a birth doula and this irks me!!!! I tell my clients they can eat just enough to at least sustain themselves. When I accompany a client to the hospital, I pack snacks for myself. They are doing FAR more work than I am so they would need it even more. I usually pack some nutritional bars, honey sticks ect for them. As far as I know in California, its the birthing mothers right to eat during labor. I mean, don't go get yourself a double bacon cheeseburger, but a little something troughout won't hurt.

My hospital wouldn't let me eat food, but I could have whatever I wanted as far as clear liquids went..so lots of popsicles, water and broth. After my daughter was born(my 3rd baby), I was given a tray of ham and scalloped potatoes. I ate a few bites and threw up. With my first 2, I had pizza after they were born, and I was just fine...
But I guess, they try to steer clear of foods incase of csection and because you can become easily nauseated during labor.
