Wouldn't it be nice? (spin off)

Wouldn't it be nice if everyone decided not to spend hundreds of dollars and instead went out and spent a few hours doing something nice for their community?

If you are doing something charitable instead of being a consumer this christmas what are you doing?

I stated in the spin off we are baking and going to an assisted living home and handing out treats to the elderly at christmas.

We always buy for angel tree and adopt a grandparent for my kids at the local nursing home. Does this suffice?

Great in theory, but without people spending our economy will sink even further.  I do not believe that a family has to choose one or the other.  You can give to help others and do for your family at the same time.  I would rather help out others all year long instead of once a year.

I would love to do something like this but I do not have money right now and i do not have time because I work retail and all the crazy shoppers make me work a zillion hours a week :( I am hoping that next year I can do something to help someone out because wonderful people have helped ME out in my lifetime.

It's not a contest LOL I was just curious and have heard so many people being upset over not being able to afford expensive gifts it kind of gets to me after a while that people forget the worth of giving a little back in other ways. Not just money. Thats all. I guess too many posts about 'fake tacky christmas trees' and other meaningless things has rubbed me the wrong way LOL

If you did something nice for your community what would you get out of it? Would you pat yourself on the back for doing a good deed b/c that's all that you will get out of that.

Me myself I'd rather have days of opening new things playing with them with my smiling DS. Making memories and being appreciated for it from the ones that love me... ppl who won't forget.

Doing something for the community ... after doing them you would be forgotten...most won't even know your name.

Something charitable instead of being a consumer I wouldn't get that "great" feeling I get when I picture my DS and I together ...again making fun memories.

Oh I agree you can do both but many people don't. Then you get posts on how people feel they NEED to spend on everyone and their dog. I just find that general thinking so silly. People forget the free things they can do for people that do mean alot, if not more then just picking something out at a store. But on the same hand some families do have to choose because they just can't afford to buy for others. There should be no guilt or feelings of obligation but sadly there is. I know I have felt it in past years myself, its taken me many years to get to the point that I don't feel guilt over not trying to afford to buy for everyone on my list and just do what I can.

Why is it about 'getting something out of it'. Isn't christmas about good will and spreading joy and cheer? But to answer your question this halloween we dressed the kids up and went to the same assisted living home and handed out cupcakes and visited with the residents. Some of the older people literally had tears in their eyes they enjoyed our visit so much. They sent us pictures they took of my dressed up children two weeks later and told us how very much it meant. I will always remember this halloween it was one of the most meaningful ones I ever had. I feel sorry for anyone who can get nothing out of doing nice things for people. Thats really unfortunate.

Many people that are more fortunate know they are and do charitable things.  I know my family does.
