I don't even know what it means... but I got one last year to give my son something to do while waiting for xmas.. I put chocolate in it to help him countdown the days but he got bored with it pretty quick... this year I thought about putting notes in it with names of book we should read on a particular night but I honestly don't have 25 xmas books to read every night ... what other activities can I add to the notes? thanks for any advice...
I have never heard the term avid.. but we do Advent calenders.. You could do a little bit of the story of Jesus every night. But I think if you really want it to be fun, you could make each little note a clue to where he can find a piece of candy you hid in the house.

I always like doing the wreath and lighting of candles each week when i was younger....I found this site I planning on doing a few of the activities... http://www.catholicmom.com/advent_kids.htm
For years we had this advent set that had a small storybook ornament for each night for the tree. I read some of the story of the birth of Jesus every night to my little one and she LOVED it! It got damaged during storage for the year..so I bought "What God wants for Christmas" nativity set this year from Lifeway. It was on sale the other week for 12.95..not sure what regular price is. But, it only counts down 7 days until Christmas. You have little presents to open in boxes..a book to read along with it and then it turns into a complete nativity set. I also found a lot of great ideas by googling the calenders when I was going to make ours. There was this cool garland advent set that had envelopes for each night. Each night had a ghirardelli(sp?) square in them..I was planning on making small button ornaments with different scripture leading up to the birth of Christ. But, it turned out cheaper to buy this set instead of making it.
