Twilight vs. Vampire Diaries

Wow, I am very confused.  Some people try to say that Vampire Diaries is a ripoff from twilight but the thing is, Vampire Diaries was written way before Twilight was even thought of.  I was just now watching the first episode of Vampire Diaries on YouTube and there are so many similarities to Twilight.  I'm not sure what to think... there are a lot of similarities in the Twilight books compared to Anne Rice's books and Vampire Diaries.  I love Twilight don't get me wrong, but, I have a feeling Stephenie Meyer stole a lot of her ideas from other books that supposedly came to her in a "vivid dream".  What do you think?  And try to explain this to me why Twilight is so much like these other two books...

Good point. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that Stephanie Meyer is a total frickin LOON.

A lot of books  nowadays are similar in characters, plots, and events. I haven't read The Vampire Diaries series but I have watched the show. IMO there was a lot of similarity in the beginning but I think as the stories go on the author's took them in different directions. But I have to base it on the show since I haven't read the books. I LOVE The Vampire Diaries and Twilight so I guess the similarities don't really bother me.

Love does not delight in evil, but rejoices in the truth. It always trusts, always protects, always hopes, always perserveres." 1 Corinthians 13:4-7

Maybe Stephanie Myers read the books a few months before her "dream" and then dreamed about them LOL. I know that I've read a book before and months later was like "hey, that's a great idea for a book" because of a dream. It's completely feasible.

Ann Rice has been writing for a very long time, she's amazing. Even if Vampire Diaries were post-Twilight (which they aren't) Ann Rice doesn't need to rip from Twilight to make her books well liked LOL. Twilight can not compare, at all.

anne rices books are waaay more adult like than twilight could ever be, and dairies came out looong before twilight, i have two out of the four of the orgnial vampire dairies books and they came out in the 90's...

both twilight and vd has a mortal women who falls in love with a vamp, takes place in highschool, and the vamps go out in daylight...

i like both books and the sookie stackhouse books, but twilight is kinda a rip on vd

Same with the Sookie Stackhouse series(True Blood) They were written before Twilight. Meyer ripped scenes out of those books and put them in her books. And I have heard some people sayTrue Blood copies Twilight.

Seriously not much you can do with Vamps that hasnt in some form or another been copied through the years in print or film-I like pretty much all of them for one reason or another even with their similarities.

No, I don't think any one's ripping Anyone off. I mean, IT'S VAMPIRES! How can ya have much to work with in the first place. They fall in LOVE (for the romance). With a human( for suspense). Buffy, True Blood, Twilight etc...

I love both! I found Twilight first and read them all right away. When Vampire Diaries came on I only watched to see how bad it was, IMO like watching a train wreck, so horrible, but at the same time couldn't stop looking. Now I love it also though so happy with the last episode can't wait till its on again!

I like both twilight and vampire diaires. I don't think either one rip each other off. Vampire books and movies have been around for a while so I think some of the same ideas get used. Its no big deal to me. I have liked vampires way before vampire diaries or twilight came out.
