giving a teething baby alcohol..?

i was at a big thanksgiving dinner tonight and there was a couple with a 6 month old baby.  the baby was teething, and clearly in pain, so the mom was dipping her finger in her wine and letting the baby suck on it...over and over again.  out of curiosity, i asked why she wasn't rubbing the wine on the gums.  she said that the baby didn't seem to like it rubbed on the gums, not even when she used bourbon, whiskey, or rum...the baby preferred to suck on the alcohol instead.

it's probably just me, but isn't this bad for a baby?

I have heard of rubbing it on the gums but NEVER letting the baby suck it off the fingers. I dont think that would be such a good idea especially if she was doing it over and over again

Both my parents and my husbands parents rubbed alcohol on our gums when we were teething.  We didn't carry on the tradition.

My Mom would dip her finger in rum and rub my gums with it.  it is supposed to help numb the area.

My husband's grandmother would rub whiskey on his gums but Baby Anbesol would probably be a safer bet nowdays.

We considered using alcohol on his gum, but instead stuck with amber teething necklaces. WAAYYY more effective and completely safe.

Now this was a really common thing to do back in the day, like when my grandma was a kid and what not. Heck even when my mom was a kid, but that was only because back then the didn't have any other method of numbing the pain from teething. Thankfully society has advanced, and we now have things like Ambesol to help ease the pain of a teething baby. Now is it safe? Yeah probably not, and really thats just common sense as to why.
