Do you give your kids chewable vitamin C, just vitamin C? I gave my son one this morning, 500mg. He is about 50 pounds. My doctor said vitamin C was fine. I am wondering if any of you give your kids that much though? My three year old is 34 pounds. I am not sure if I should give him that much. I have gotten conflicted information. I forgot to ask the pediatrician how much. I will ask later. I was curious what you do and how much you were told was safe.

I have been told that vitamin C is one of the ones you can't overdose on.  The body just eliminates what it doesn't need.  My mom gave it to me when I was a kid and the dr said to double or triple it when I seemed to be getting a cold.  I give it to my son when he starts getting sniffly, and still take it myself as well.

Your body cannot store Vitamin C, it gets used or it gets eliminated.

Are you giving him the vitamin C every day? Are you trying to prevent illness? Is he already sick?

He is sick now and has been off and on since the beginning of September. He has NEVER been sick this often. He takes a multivitamin but is really bad about eating veggies and fruit. He doesn't even like juice. My little one loves cranberry juice so he is probably getting enough.

Vitamin C is water soluble so you pee out the excess, but there can be side effects from taking too much vitamin C.  I honestly would give him natural sources of vitamin C if he's sick such as fruit juice instead.  If he's already taking a multi-vitamin and drinking juice, he's getting plenty.   High doses of vitamin C can cause diarrhea and stomach upset.   When my son is sick, I allow him a little more juice than usual.  Does he like Pedialyte or any other type of drink with vitamin C in it?  I probably would ask a pediatrician before giving him an adult dose of chewable C.
