Nintendo DS question?

I've been looking into getting some type of DS for my son for Christmas.  A co-worker of my hubby has a DS lite that he's willing to sell us at a good price (Please no bashing for buying something used as a gift.  My son is 5, he doesn't care, and I'd rather be able to afford a used gift than no gift.)  Anyway, my question is....there are so many different styles of these things.....the DS, the DS lite, the DSi.....do they all take the same games, or do I need to only look for games specific to the DS lite?

Also, for anyone who has one already for a younger child, what are some of their favorite games?

The DS lite will take all ds games and has a port for gameboy advanced games(if you can still find them)...the DSi will not...it will only play ds games..

My SIL just got the DS lite for my nephew and we werent sure about the games but were informed any Nintendo DS game works in any of the Nintendo DS sytems. Hope its true because we bought lots of games for him (he is also 5). There didnt seem to be any different packaging so I think they were right with the information they passed along. I am sure your son will love it, slightly used or not!

im looking into getting a nintendo DS lite as well. :)

the only difference between the DS and DS lite is size. the DSi is the newer one out. i dont know too much about it, other then it has 2 cameras on it.

they all will play the same games. the DS and DS lite will actually play old game boy games as well.

DS lite id neat.  I have one and so does my DD who is 6.  I like it better because I can play all the gameboy games I used to.  She likes the spongebob games and some of the Mario Games.  They have a ton of learning games you can get.  It'll kill 2 birds with 1 stone :)  Good luck.  And don't let anyone get on you about it being used.  I buy and sell used games all the time.  That is also another suggestion for games is to find a local Game Stop or store like it to buy used games.  I play mine and beat them really fast so I get bored.  The used ones are cheaper and they will guarantee they work.  Hope this helps.

My 5 yr old has one and he love the lego batman game.  He also plays ben 10,indiana jones, atv, star wars.  My 3yr old also plays these.  Now some are a little harder but my boys also play these on xbox 360 so if your little on can play games on big systems he will not have a problem

soon to be hubby works in the electronics dept of walmart and we are video game people. The dsi has a camera and doesn't take the gameboy games. Ds light is smaller than a regular ds so might be easier for little hands to hold.

Thank you guys so much, especially for the game suggestions :-)

We do have a local Game Stop, so I'm going to send hubby to check them out this weekend.

If you go that route I suggest purchasing their warranty. If the DS stops working they will replace it right there in the store.

I was only going to get games there.  The DS it's self we know someone selling one, so that's already covered.  And it was owned and played by an adult, so I know it hasn't been dropped and abused.
