I friend of mine told me that she gets SSI for her child but she says she doesn't do it just for the insurance and the money. What else is there? I know it helps out a great deal because my daughter gets it as well and we are so thankful for it but are there really other future benifits that are available for my child like scoliorships for school and stuff just because she has disabilities. I'm not sure if I understand what she ment. I will ask her but I was just wondering if someone else maybe knew.

SSI may have additional resources to help a family with schooling, any therapy a child/family member may need?

For years I have avoided taking SSI for my disability but the economy is forcing me to apply, so for me it would be the money and the secondary insurance coverage because mine has a lot of out of pocket expenses.  I also have recently applied for my son as well, that was because Medicaid in our state makes you do that for all disabled children.

I think there are benefits such as payments for college or job training programs go in the future. Also the program guidelines change from time to time when it comes to the government so getting a child on SSI now might be easier than it will be by the time they are an adult for example as its showing that the child already has a long term disability. Years ago it was easier to get SSI than it is now and those people who were already collecting were factored in whereas if they hadn't been collecting they might not have qualified under the changed guidelines. Hope that makes sense.
