Oh just wanted to add...I've never let my son cry it out...he has cried for a few minute until I could get to him but I havent let him cry himself to sleep.... he is nursed as well and he goes through growth spurts and phases were he needs extra nursing/cuddling ... but it always passes.... If I were you i would just nurse on demand and ride it out...it will pass... but then you know your baby best :-) Oh and another thing most breastfeed babies dont sleep through the night. My little guy is 9 months old and most nights he still nurses at least once at night and then wakes early.

Babies are very unpredictable.  One day they can sleep for 12 hours and the next day they will only sleep a few hours at a time.  Your baby is still very young.  If it keeps being a problem I would consider taking her to her pediatrician just to make sure she is not sick or anything.  Maybe she just has a case of colic.

i started my dd at 5 months.. and i was so glad i did, she only cried for 25 mins the first night. i read that a full term baby is mental able to at 4 months( dont hate me, hate the docs who wrote the book) you can give it a try and if it seems too hard wait a week and try again... a week makes a big difference in a baby time.

I started at 6 months with my oldest dd and plan on starting again at 6 months with my new dd. I dont think it would hurt to try now with her tho jmo. Some ppl say that cio is mean, but it worked fr me and i dont think it is mean. I believe a child has to learn to soothe themselves eventually. Good luck momma:)

I didn't CIO till they were about 15 months old.

I agree with the other replies... she might be going through a growth spurt, or have colic, and feels the need for the extra attention right now.  If she's continuing to fuss a lot even after you go to pick her up, it makes me think that something is bothering her.  Has she been seeming gassier than normal? Hiccups a lot?  I know my youngest used to get hiccups SO much at that age, and it made it impossible for him to sleep.  I found this stuff called Gripe Water.  It's all natural, no actual medications, and it's to help with colic and hiccups.  It's made by Little Remedies.  It was an absolute lifesaver for us!  After the first day of using it, my little guy slept through the night.

As far as the CIO... you'll probably get some ladies on here telling you to never do it at all.  It's your personal choice.  If you feel like it's best for your child, then use it when you see fit.  We didn't start using it until about 8-9 months old though, but I don't think 5 months is that unreasonable of an age.  It all depends on the child.
