Crib to Toddler Bed

At what age/size/poundage did you switch your child from a crib to a toddler bed?  My son will be 3 in Feb. and he is pretty long...most mornings he is crushed up against one of the rails of the crib.  Width-wise, he is too long to fit, length-wise he has about 6 inches of room.  Our crib switches over, so it shouldn't be too hard to switch, I'm just wondering when is the right time?

i just switched my son (17 months) to a toddler bed about a week ago, because i dont want him to be attached to the crib when its time to put our baby that is on the way in there. If it werent for that Id probably wait til he was 2 or so.

Taking each day as it comes and trying to make the best out of every situation. I love my family and hate to cook, Taco bell is my favorite although i try not to eat out all the time. Im a probreastfeeding, anti CIO, gotta work kind of mom.

My son was 16 months when he broke the front off of his crib (climbing out) so I turned it into a day bed.... About 3 months later he got a twin size race car bed that he still sleeps in now at 3.5..

Not sure on his measurements but I will look for a picture!

Our oldest is 2 now and we switched him when he was about 15 months old and he did great with the switch. My nephew is 3 1/2 and he never really slept in a crib..only a few times..him and his mom co-slept mostly..anyhow we switched my son when we found out we were expecting number two, that way he quit thinking of it as his and then whe our baby started sleeping in there he wouldn't think the baby took it from him...however turns out our youngest won't even be sleeping in there til he's almost a year old anyway because I don't want them to share a room, so that was a waste, but he loves his big boy racecar bed...

How did you all do the transition?  My daughter is 17 months and she gets out and starts playing right away.

We just kept the floor spotless to the point u could eat off it, and between that, basineetes, playpens and rails we managed without cribs.
