Recalls!! Are some truly nesseccary?

Ok so like this is what brings on this question....I was at Wal-Mart and my hubby was at the Service Desk and I was looking at the recall board. And a few of the recalls truly astounded me and it was like OMFG how fricking stupid. The main one to catch my eye was one for a crib brand that was being recalled because "Mis-assembly could lead to collapsing on baby and suffocation" Um....First off that's not a factory error....that's an "I didn't read the directions because I was smug and stupid error" I really don't mean to offend but what in the fricking world? It says on the fricking instruction packet and the box assemble properly to avoid collapsing and suffocation. Thinking furher made me realize the only reason these recalls occur most of the time is because someone didn't read the instructions and when the kid got hurt they said "Well hot dog now we can sue them and get lots of money" Which is a result of their own idiocy and  then you have the judge who is dumb enough to grant these people their claim. Another recall was for a jewelry set that (Infants and toddlers could choke on) which yes they can...but first of all it says on the package it is for children of a certain age and second of all...it's common sense to most mothers that infants and toddlers put everything in their mouth....and if the child is of age...STILL...don't let your kids put stuff in their mouths. Now the recalls where the jewelry has high levels of lead......or like there was a carseat which was being recalled for detaching from the base when involved in an extreme high speed collision, those don't seem stupid to me, but the recall of the toy holder shelves in the room in the box that can fall over when the child climbs on it is not a problem of the factory..it's the problem of the parent who should have been watching her kid and/or not letting him climb on things that he can opbviously get hurt on. To me it is seriouly a matter of common sense and the ridiculousness that we can sue any one for any stupid reason.....Like how if a child drowns in a neighbors pool (even if the child was being unattended and/or snuck into the yard) the mother can sue the neighbor for the childs death even though the mother was not watching the child to begin with and the neighbor was not responsible in any way.

Am I the only one who feels this way about the sheer stupidity of some of these recalls?

I know which crib you are talking about and it was factory/designe error.  You couldn't tell the top of the rail from the bottom, and the instructions were no help in telling the top from the bottom.  I know cause I own 2 of them.

It should have said that then...it made it seem like it was an unnesseccary recall....lnot that it was an honest factory error....all it said was if mis-assembled it could cause injury...not because they messed up the side rail. But still there are some pretty frivolous dealings going on with these recalls.

Yeah, some recalls are due to the stupidity of the buyers.  But, we have to protect them from themselves, I guess.  :P  lol

My daughter's favorite toy was recalled because the nose could come off and pose a choking hazard.  Im a bad mom because I just checked the nose every day after she went to bed.  It never became loose and she still played with it.  I was NOT taking away her favorite toy.  (If the nose had become loose, I would have just cut it off myself)  The bunny is now in her memory box for when she grows up.  (its a LARGE memory box-I can't bear to give up some things!)

My mom won't let the neighborhood kids jump on her trampoline or swim in her pool.  This is because even if she ISN"T home and doesn't know the kids are over, she can still be sued (and she will lose) if the kids get injured or drown.  She has a lock on the back gate.  I think its dumb that she could get in trouble when its someone else thats not watching their own child.  But, thats how the country works sometimes.

I agree it was a strange recall.  I know people who had assembled them correctly who took them back.  Mine was done right (after a lot of staring and swearing), so I wasn't worried about it.  The recall came out after I had bought and assembled our second one (15 months apart for my girls).  I would say it was a design error the top of the rail should have been clearley marked.

I agree some of the recalls have been petty.  I remember a stroller recall that if a child put his hand there while closing he could lose fingers.  Sadly you know someone has done this.

The one that got me was the Bumbo seat recall. It was recalled because someone put the baby in it on a countertop and the baby fell.  Well, hello!!! Don't put your baby in anything like that on top of a counter.

OMFG...That's the type of stuff you know before you even leave the hospital...It says every where don't do it. Plus it's common sense....I just don't even understand the judges that allow the lawsuits to pass and show favor for the one suing. It's baffling.

They don't just recall an item every time some idiot misuses it. They have to have SEVERAL people have same issues with a product before it is recalled.

Oh, and it is inevitable that someone is going to be sensitive to the R word and report your post.. so if you don't want it to get deleted, you should probably change that. :)
