'Customizing' my Valentines Day gift to hubby

My husband is at Ft Lee, VA right now in Army AIT school. He will be there until the end of February and then has to go to MI for more training. Needless to say, we won't be together on Valentines Day. I got him a book for Valentines Day - it's a collection of quotes and short poems all about love and soulmates and bestfriends - it's really sweet. But I want to customize it. I was thinking about maybe cutting out the index pages (since they have no importance) and painting the outside covers a solid color so it looks more homemade. Then I was going to tape a picture of him and I inside the front and back covers so he'll see them when he opens the book. Does anybody have any other suggestions on how to make it more personal? I would really appreciate any ideas. Thanks!

Google "altered books".  There are so many possibilities with books. =)

Great idea!
