How much crying is normal?

My 1 1/2 year old used to be very easy to put to bed, until I had to take his pacifier away about 4 months ago.  He only cried for it for a couple nights and has never asked for it since, but now no matter what I do he cries for at least 10 minutes before going to sleep.

I can never tell when hes ready to lay down anymore, no matter if I put him to bed early, late, if he runs and gets his energy out or if hes calm and reading books, he always ends up crying when I tell him its time for bed.  We do have a routine, I read him a book or two, brush his teeth, then sing a song and lay him down with quiet classical music playing.  Some nights he cries for maybe 10 minutes, other nights its a half hour.  I feel bad like maybe he wasn't ready to go to sleep, but its every night no matter what time.  I don't know if I should feel bad or if this is all babies.

So my question is how do you put your one year old to bed and how long do/did they cry for?
