Can I afford community college? *update*

well I applied online to Pima Communtiy College and it said I was accepted! I called the admissions to make sure and they said it should have given me my student number. So in the next few days I'm going to fill out the FAFSA and see what grants I qualify for. I am beyond excited about going back to school so I'm going to find a way to afford it.

without having to take out any loans?

I went to a smaller university from 2004 to (if I remember correctly) 2007 (I know I was pregnant with our youngest when I dropped out for the second time)

Anyways, I paid my college through loans and grants (I was a single mom). Well now I'm feeling I want to go back to school. I need to get my degree. I mean, that's 2 years of my life I spent in college that I'll never get back, and I don't even have a degree. I looked at my local college and I'm sending in my application for the fall.

Can I still fill out a FAFSA and get grants? I'm married, does that affect the financial aid I can get? Is it expensive? I have so much research to do and I want to go back to school really bad!

Sure you can still get finacial aid other than loans!  Hubby and I qualified for free tuition and money for books but we don't qualify even for WIC so yeah, fill it out!

Tuition wasn't that bad but books, wow those things are expensive!

I go to a local college here... granted, every college is different, but I pay $100 per credit hour.  The entire program to become an RN (which is what I am working towards) will cost me $7800.  Thats NOTHING in comparison to what I was payign at a private college studying musical theater.. a degree that will get me no where.

I filled out an FAFSA... I was too late for financial aid this spring, so I paid the $1100 out of pocket.  But I qualify for the fall... I will pay $450 out of pocket, and the other $750 will be covered by a federal grant that I won't have to pay back...

Yes being married will affect it, the same way your parents income would have affected you going to college and getting financial aid when you were 17/18.  If you are declared on someone elses taxes (husbands parents etc) you put that information in...

Good luck!

Did you pay those loans or are they in good standing?  If you are in default on those loans I think they can refuse financial aid...  Good luck

I think it may depend on how much you make. When I was in school if you made under so much you could get your tuition  paid for totally by a bogg fee waiver, and for books there was EOPS, and then on top of that you get pell, and cal grant which ened up being about 1500 every three months if I remember correctly. I never paid a dime out of pocket for anything, but I grew up really love income I think if you have kids it helps you qualify for more stuff.

Yes ma'am you most certainly qualify for grants AND scholarships! You CANNOT get ANY of that without having a current FASFA on file.  So, what are you waiting for?

actually the loans are still in deferment. I was scheduled to begin paying in Sept 08 but got them defered because I didn't have a job. Then they contacted me again and said they would be defered for another year due to low income.

Okay, so do I have to be accepted to fill out the FAFSA? Or can I just fill it out now while waiting for my application to be accepted? I'm filling out my app online for our community college. I saw that they have the classes I am interested in available online. I'm really excited to go back it's just I don't even know where to start. It's been almost 6 years since I started the process of applying to college.

You can fill out the FAFSA before you are accepted.  When you get to the "send to my school" section of the FAFSA find your schools code and put it in.  FAFSA will then send you financial aid paperwork to the school and teh school should attach it to your application
