I feel like I failed my son.

Back story, my son had the stomach flu and got really dehydrated.  We took him to the ER sunday.  They tried EIGHTS times to get an IV in, 5 different nurses and only one was ever able to 3 times and all 3 times his vein collapsed.  I finally could not take it anymore and yelled at them and told them to STOP.

He is so bruised everywhere, from them trying so many times.  Every time I look at his bruises, I cry.  I feel like I failed him because I let them try so many times and let it go one for so long.  I feel like such horrible mommy, it is my job to protect him and I didn't!!!  I had to hold him down while they kept poking him and he looked at me terrified.  There was nothing I could do.

I can't stop crying.

You were only trying to help them help him get better. Don't beat yourself up over it!

But now I have come to believe that the whole world is an enigma, a harmless enigma that is made terrible by our own mad attempt to interpret it as though it had an underlying truth.

Next time just rush to the pharmacy and get pedialyte or keep it in stock, heck even gatorade or Powerade and such would work.  You were doing what you thought was best and we always think the professional medical community is best and they truly are not!

Ex:  My husband had an impacted tooth and he went to the ER because he had a fever that spiked to 105 degrees and although the gave him 2 IVs and some penicilin, they never really found out the cause!

how was he supposed to get better, if he didn't get hydrated.  I would never have stopped them.  So, how did he end up getting fluids(sorry for no question marks, key is broken).

It is not your fault! Dehydration happens so quickly, and what's important is you got him the help he needed!

You had to have them put the IV in... hun if his veins were collapsed THAT is the point i'd be freaking out... that is way to dehydrated.  Dont get mad at them for doing what they needed to do to save your son.

My son had an intestinal virus. So I know where your coming from. Sometimes a child is beyond Gatorade or pedialyte as a remedy, so they have to go to the hospital. As for the nurses sticking him too many times and screwing up...I would be mad to, but they were trying to help your son. They have to stick my DS a few times before they find a good vein. It is heartbreaking. It's always unpredictable on whether or not a nurse can hit a vein the first try. I feel your pain though.

Awww Mommaaaaaaa :(  Awwww....geez....now I'm sad too!  He'll forgive you...just forgive yourself!  You thought what they were doing was going to help him.  I would have punched the nurse out...awwwwwwwwwwwww.

Just give him lots of lovins and he'll be ok.  Children are very good at letting stuff like this go like the day after it happened.  Hang in there.

i had this happen when my son was 8 months they blew his viens 3 times before finally getting it. i had sat with him all night in the ER and when we finally got in there i couldnt take it i felt so bad but the nurses had to hold him down and i was out in the hall crying. his dad.. was sleeping at home because he had to work only he had been home with my son all day and when i got home i asked if he had been drinking anything and he said no.. and i went to change his diaper and it was completly dry i asked him when the last time he changed it was and he said a few hours ago my son was in his crib and he was playing and fing video game. i should have known then that our marriage was doomed because i hold onto that shit.. it dosnt sit well with me. so look at the positive atleast your not like my Ex and actually took him in to get help because without help dydration in little ones is VERY serious. and ps i couldnt get him to drink anything neither could the nurses or doctors i can tell you why though because the stomach flu he had was the worst one i ever had as well i didnt want to drink anything either and i knew better.
