Red ear...does that mean ear infection in my baby?

He is 7 months old, and teething...so he is fussy. but today I notice that one of his ears is really red on the outside. And when I get him to lagh, he leans his head to that same side.  Could he be getting an ear infection?

no, when its red on the inside is when it is infected. Red usually means inflammation/infection.

So, why do ya think it is so red on the outside? Any ideas?

Is he pulling at his ear? Crying or upset? Hot?

If he is pulling at his ear it could mean that it is infected. If you see a rash or something then that is different it could be a virus, eczema, etc. IF he is crying or upset then that could explain why his ears are red. My son is very light completiced and sometimes when he gets made he has red blothches on his face. Lastly, if he is hot it could cause his ears to be red. Or if he has a fever also.

he might have an earache from teething.  Is he having any drainage at all?

The ear does feel hot. No drainage and he is not pulling on it.

Oh and yes, he is really upset.  No fever though.

Then his ears being red could be because he is mad and throwing a fit. When he calms down check and see if it is still red.

I would just give him some tylenol and keep an eye on him.  If the redness doesnt soon go away then I would make him an appointment in the morning

Okay ladies, thank you both so much!  I will take both of your advice!

thats true...there is a nerve that runs down the jaw and up to the ear so during teething it irratates this nerve and can cause ear pain. If it is still red after he calms down you could try the tylenol and see if he feels better afterwards.
