Do you...or could you survive on $1,200 a month WITHOUT ANY assistance...and still afford the necessities?

Nope, wouldn't cover our mortgage and utilities.

nope my rent is 1150 a month. We did do it while we were in the military and lived in base housing and we barely made it by

I guess, if I HAD to, but I would have to sell my house & my cars.  I certainly wouldn't be able to live in the lifestyle I am accustomed.
