ADHD is NOT just hyper activity

  • difficulty paying attention to details and tendency to make careless mistakes in school or other activities; producing work that is often messy and careless
  • easily distracted by irrelevant stimuli and frequently interrupting ongoing tasks to attend to trivial noises or events that are usually ignored by others
  • inability to sustain attention on tasks or activities
  • difficulty finishing schoolwork or paperwork or performing tasks that require concentration
  • frequent shifts from one uncompleted activity to another
  • procrastination
  • disorganized work habits
  • forgetfulness in daily activities (for example, missing appointments, forgetting to bring lunch)
  • failure to complete tasks such as homework or chores
  • frequent shifts in conversation, not listening to others, not keeping one's mind on conversations, and not following details or rules of activities in social situations

Hyperactivity symptoms may be apparent in very young preschoolers and are nearly always present before the age of seven. Symptoms include:

  • fidgeting, squirming when seated
  • getting up frequently to walk or run around
  • running or climbing excessively when it's inappropriate (in teens this may appear as restlessness)
  • having difficulty playing quietly or engaging in quiet leisure activities
  • being always on the go
  • often talking excessively

    Impulsivity symptoms include:

    • impatience
    • difficulty delaying responses
    • blurting out answers before questions have been completed
    • difficulty awaiting one's turn
    • frequently interrupting or intruding on others to the point of causing problems in social or work settings
    • initiating conversations at inappropriate times

i believe it's real, but i also believe that there are quite a few kids out there given a label they really don't need.

I believe that many kids do "have" it...but I think it's a new thing in our generation that we create ourselves. I do not think children are born with it. I also think it can be prevented.

I believe it exist but WAY over diagnosed.  Some do not realize that being hyper does NOT mean having ADHD....

yes I do think it is legit however... In my mind I feel a lot of doctors and parents use it as a go to when a kid is unmanageable... So sad imo... I mean with a little love and guidance some kids wouldn't need medication. you know?

Yes I most certaintly do and anyone who doesnt believe in it is more than happy to take my son for a week or two off meds and see what happens. He even begs for his meds because he says he cannot keep his brain straight-his own words. He says when he is off his meds he has the urge to just do a ton of things and his brain wont shut off and he has to move or he will pull his hair out. He does great on meds though.

i believe that it is a 'real' diagnosis, but i feel like when a child is bad or too hyper that is what they jump too immediately.

but yes i do believe in it - i had it growing up

awwww poor thing, i hate that! especially when it's the teachers that do the diagnosing, HELLO! there's a reason you are a teacher and not a Pediatrician! pft...that really irks me.

yes, but i think it's overdiagnosed.  when i was a kid, i was really full of energy and a little advanced in school... between the two, it seemed like i was boucing off the walls and not paying attention.  so my teacher talked to the school counselor and they tried to convince my parents that i had ADHD and "something needed to be done."  in reality, i was done with my work and bored because everybody else was still working.  thankfully, my parents recognized it and got me put in advanced classes instead of trying to medicate me.
