Any college mommies here I could use some input.
Well I'm going back to school in September I am so excited :D But I am so torn as to what to go far I'm debating between social work and music education. I love helping people but I also love music. I have been playing piano for 10 years. I really like both fields but I like music education more. My biggest fear though is that I will graduate and not be able to find a job since music teachers are the first to go when budgets are cut. What do you ladies think?? Is it possible to have 2 majors when your also a mom? I'm so confused any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Private message me i will look for the link i have and send it to you and it will tell you everything about any occupation and i am pretty sure you can look at the job market as well I am going to school to be a teacher
Also in the subject include something in the subject along the lines of music teacher or something
Hmmm, that's tough. I know many school districts are cutting back on teachers and extra programs. My sister graduated May 2009 and was able to get a job teaching due to a family connection. She's a 7th grade math teacher. I know where we live in WA, many teachers were laid off due to budget cuts. So based on that I'd say if getting a job is more important, then go for social work. If you are really passionate about music education then go for that. You want to enjoy what you are doing ultimately. But from my personal experience I majored in something I liked and not a particular career field and I regret it. So I'll be going back for an actual career. I got a BA in American Studies, minor in history and I'll be going back for my second degree BSN (nursing). I don't want to say those 4 yrs in college were wasted but I wish I would have thought it through more. At least my sister graduated with an education license. She can teach elementary, middle school math, and middle school and high school Spanish.
I'm in school right now getting a BA in Social Work and a minor in Sociology. I have 2 kids and a hubby in the military who is constantly away training or deployed and I manage to do it. So yes it can be done. I am of course exhausted and worn out but I just try to remember why it is I am going to school which is to better our families life. You can do it. :)
You can definitely do two majors! I double majored in Anthropology and History and don't regret it one bit. I'm all for going with what you love. Sure, I could have picked another major but I love both, so I decided to just go for it. Although, I do start graduate school in January (unless I want to be a tutor or teacher, I need my MA!).
College is very do-able with children! You may get less sleep because of studying or writing papers but it's well worth it in the end! Good luck to you!!!!
Thank you to all of those that responded I'm sorry I haven't replied yet I've been in the process of moving.
Yes, you could major in one and minor in the other...look at it this way-everything you do educatin wise is only going to benefit ur child(ren) in the long run, right? Do both and then not only will you be able to get a good job, but also take care of your family too. Best of both worlds right?
Sure, you can double major. but I would go for something that I enjoy AND that has a good earning potential AND is Recession Proof.
My Oldest dd looked at the job market in our area, found out what career had the most job opportunities and the best salaries and what was needed the most even during the worst part of the recession and based her decision on that.
She is now in College and is Majoring in Nursing.
