Take the batteries out of your old cell phones!
There was a huge article on the local news today about kids playing with old cell phones and calling 911. If you have an old cellphone that doesn't have service on it please take the battery out before giving it to your kids because it still has the capability to dial 911. The article said they field almost a call a day because of this.
Thats my PSA for today lol.
Wow! Thanks. I think we have 3-4 around here that they play with!!
Yeah Ive donated a few to the local sheriffs dept. They give them out to people who can't afford a phone so they have access to be able to dial 911 if needed.

I donate my old cell phones. Always have. AT&T will take them for soldiers deployed. I also donate them to the Spouse Abuse shelter here. I take them to the Sheriff's office, because the Shelter is, for obvious reasons, a secret location.
Well if you have an old cell phone but just turn it off and don't let the battery die it could still be turned off and 911 dialed.

I never thought of that. but I would get they get more from cell phones that are actively being used...only because the battery dies after a few days.

Yup. They can I used to work for a cellphone company and would remind customers that if they were not going to donate it and keep it for emergencies that they could still do this. But to take it out if it became a toy.
Yep that happened to me when I finally got a new phone, I had always taken the old batteries out before I gave it to my 2 year old, but this time I forgot. Luckily she also put it on speaker when the lady answered so I didn't have to worry about the cops knocking on my door.
