Oh poor guy, I don't know mama, so here is a bump for you. I had to wear one of those eye patch things when I was 8, because my sister so kindly tried to poke my eye out with a pencil, they suck!

Yes!

My middle dd was born with a cataract on her right eye. Like your son, she never kept her patch on after her surgery. They tried everything from different patches to arm braces and nothing worked. She is almost 9 and has no sight other than she sees shadows in that eye. She wears glasses now with no prescription in them to protect her left eye. Did they put a contact in his eye at any point? Cause they did for J and she was forever rubbing it out.

J had the surgery when she was a year old. But, in the end, it was useless and a waste of time according to her doc.

He's cute btw.

This is Jordyn.  If you can see how her right eye is squinted.   She doesn't have her glasses on here because she had just broken them.  I forgot to mention in my first reply that even tho the surgery wasn't a success, Jordyn functions very well with one eye and half the time, we don't even think  about the fact that she doesn't have but only one good one.

Yea we started a contact when he was 2m old...they said if they didn't do the surgery at 4 weeks he prolly would be completely blind but  we still haven't been doing good with him seeing out of it...his last surgery they did was to put the lens in his eye and hey was forming another cataract. They said when he gets glasses it should be better for him, but the eye patch he bumps into things b/c he can't see good!I"m lost as to if he is ever gonna see out of it. They said it won't be very good when he does but they just can't say if he is gonna see until he gets older and tells him what he sees.

Does they sun bother her eye alot...DS is always squit even with the littlest light on it...i didn't know it was so sensitive till he had this. We found out at birth but they didn't wanna tell us alot about it until we went to the childrens hospital...he was born with no red lines in his eye aswell and ur suppose to have those to see with that eye, he wouldn't open his eye for along time b/c of this. They said he prolly hit something in the womb and thats what caused it.

The doctor told me that Jordyn's chances were pretty good. But, I swear I DID everything to keep that child's patch on. They prescribed her with the arm braces and my little turkey would go to her room and rub her eye on her blankets until the patch started to roll off her eye and she could see out of it. If, by the grace of God, I managed to keep it on for more than a half an hour she would fall asleep which did nothing to help the situation at all.

They told me that putting a lens on the eye wasn't a good idea because of the eye still growing? I'm surprised that they were going to put one on him. Did they have to cut the stalk out of the back of the eye for him? What I mean is that when the eye develops there is a stalk that grows up from the back of the eye and when the eye develops in utero(sp) it's supposed to dissipate but J's never did. So they had to go into the back of the eye and cut the stalk away as well as remove the cataract. Gosh that doesn't bring back good memories.

Oh, and no, the cataract was caused by the stalk thing mentioned above. It is a heriditary thing from my mother's side that I never knew about until Jordyn was born and I met an uncle who was born with the same problem. And yes, she hates the sun..complains about it constantly but refuses to wear sunglasses.

ETA: They never told me about Jordyn until she was almost a year old. The "doctor" I took her too kept telling me that her eye was normal. It floated around hopelessly from birth. He said the eye was still developing and that is why it did that. Of course, I knew better than that and when I finally got a new doctor(I had a HMO and well that explains a lot), they found the cataract as soon as they saw her and referred her to the eye specialist and had the surgery within a month. I get irritated because I told the doctor that there was a problem from her birth. Grrr.

Well he waited a while to put the lens in b/c the eye was still growing, he did say he would have to get it redone again, he has a problem with his eye goin to the side alot and he said he could fix that but it would just go back and do it again and we would have to have more surgeries then he knows we're gonna have now. He had the arm braces that we used until he figured he could use his teeth to take them off. i Can't really remember what all they had to do to put the lens in but i know he gave a a card for the artifical lens and we have to show that if he gets anything done to him. Before i had my last baby we asked if he would go thru the same thing and he said no b/c his is from him hitting something in the womb. Luckily this baby didn't have to go thru that it was very hard for use and still is...he goes April 1st back to childrens and we're hoping he will get his glasses, he doesn't wanna do them until he is good at seeing right now, he had high hopes now he said he wasn't sure what the outcome will be. Sucks u don't want ur kids to go thru something like that.
