Does Your Child Have Dyslexia?

I was wondering what they do to test for it?

For some reason, my son writes his numbers backwards. Or, if it's 12, he rights it was 21. He often confuses d and b as well. His teacher mentioned dyslexia......I was wondering how they determine it.

My daughter is dyslexic. How old is your son?

My son has it. There are actually no tests that show a child has it. They use a series of other tests involving memory, reading, phonetics, processing, etc. to make the determination. You cannot just have your child take a test to find out and a teacher should not diagnose, only a specialist should.

My husband has dyslexia but he doesnt remember how the testing went other than there was an IQ test. We think my stepson may have it. He is only 4 and is very very smart, but he says sentences backwards and asks questions backwards (which husband did when he was little). He doesnt really read or write yet so we are not assuming anything though....

She didn't diagnose...she just mentioned it as a concern.

They usually will diagnose in 2nd grade or so. WRiting numbers backward and so forth before then is considered developmentally normal. My daughter was tested by a pediatric neuropyschologist. If they test him at school more than likely they won't call it dyslexia they will say that he has a processing disorder.

He has an appointment to see the DR on Monday for a MESS of problems. He's 5, he gets maybe 5 hours of sleep a night, he doesn't eat for fear of becoming fat...there are just a lot of issues going on with him and we are really concerned. His twin sister, who is 30 seconds younger, is 2 inches taller and weights 10lbs more...

How old is your son? I forget the age of hand but up to certain age that is a very common things to happen. It's as they get older and it still happening that dyslexia has be taken into consideration.

Also there are other things that can seem like dyslexia, but they are not. My daughter for example has convergence insufficiency. This is NOT dyslexia, but when it comes to reading and learning we are using the same multi-sensory teaching/learning methods that are used for dyslexia.

A specialized eye doctor is the only one that can properly test.

Edit Add: In regards to the convergence insufficiency it seems like dyslexia in regards to my daughter learning, reading, etc, but it's NOT. That's why you need a specialized eye doctor.
