getting rid of the pacifier

My DD is 18 months old, and is starting to be very vocal when I take her pacifier (nookie, binky, etc) away in the mornings.  I have tried to make it so she only has one during naptime or bedtime.... but now she pitches a fit when it's time to give it up in the morning.

Which says to me - it's time to take it away completely.  But I don't know how.  I tried to look online for tips on weaning from the pacifier, but a lot of places say to poke a hole in it!  Which doesn't seem at all safe to me - I don't want the hole to grow and have her swallow a piece of plastic.

So what's easier - losing the pacifier cold turkey???  And just dealing with the harder bed/nap times (which stinks - she has  only been putting herself to sleep for about 2 weeks, and still wakes up crying in the middle of the night if she loses her pacifier in her bed)...  OR is it easier to wean, and if so... how do I do this more than I have??? Do I take nap time pacifier away next and then work on bedtime?  I could use some advice - thanks

I took my son's when he was old enough to understand it and we had no issues.  He only had it at night and nap from 1 to 3.  Then, at 3, I told him he wasn't a baby and pacis were for babies.  We boxed up all his pacis (about a million of them) and "mailed" them to the new babies.  And, he got a present from then in return.

DD is 20 months and still has her paci for nap/bed time and at times when she needs that extra sense of security. I'm always there to comfort her, but sometimes she wants her paci or "blankee" when she is feeling shy/nervous.

You know what's best for your LO, so if you feel like its time to say goodbye to the paci, I've heard that some moms have success with completely cutting off the plastic part of the paci so there is nothing for the baby to suck on. I don't know how/why this works, but I guess it wouldn't hurt to try......

i cut the tip off my son's.    he told me it was broken and to put it in the trash.     so i let him throw it away.    that same night,  he asked for it and i reminded him that it broke and we had to get rid of it.    yes, he cried for two nights, but only for about 5 mins.   after that, he was fine.

i would do it cold turkey....  and just hang in there for the first few nights....
