So this is the first time we have been able to afford getting a family portrait done, and I want to know if you have color suggestions for the outfits, this will be done in an outside location in April if it helps.

Blue shirts, or brightly colored shirts.

Bright colors would look nice.  I find it easier to focus on the people in the picture if I don't "see" the clothes... meaning they should not be so brightly patterned that that's all you see.  I tend to get anal with our pictures and make sure that we all dress in the same color and in solids if possible!

Depends. I have a cool skin tone, and my 3 children & DH have a warm skin tone. SO it's really hard for us to find any color that compliments us all. Last time we had a family portrait done, DH & DS wore red shirts, I wore a brown peasant top, and my oldest DD wore a white peasant top that had small red, brown, & pink flowers on it.

I would love to have one done where the girls and I are wearing white linen dresses, DH & DS are wearing light colored jeans and white dress shirts with the sleeves rolled and a few buttons undone, and all of us without shoes. And we are all outside sitting in some nice lush green grass or in the branches of a tree. I just think that would be cute.

In my honest opinion, I think it looks terribly cheesy when everyone wears the same color. All jeans or khakis or whatever is fine for everyone, but the same shirt color blends everyone together. Just be yourselves!

It really depends on where you're doing the session at. I would suggest lighter colors that will compliment the background. A classic is white shirts and jeans. It makes a nice uniform look for the whole family. If you choose to go with a color, make sure you can find similar styles for the whole family.

Good luck!

Keep us posted.

I know it will all be solid colors, and I want us all to be in the same colors, I think it makes you look more like a family unit :)

I'd go with bright colors....maybe tan pants for everyone, and solid colored polo's?  That would look nice ;) and spring-like ;)
