car seat expiration?

My infant car seat was used up until my son was 20lbs, it goes up to 22lbs.  He was about 18 months old.

The only date I can find on it is April 2007 manufactures date.

We bought the seat in Feb. 2008.  It is a baby trend car seat.

Any ideas where to find the expiration?

We want to have a baby in May 2011 and would like to if possible use this seat.

How old is too old for a safety seat?

There is some controversy about the "expiration" date for safety seats. All experts agree that a seat should be discarded and destroyed if it is more than 10 years old, even if it looks fine. Most manufacturers suggest replacing a seat 5 to 8 years after the date of manufacture, because current safety seats may have better safety features than older seats, such as a tether or air bag warnings. The date of manufacture may be found on a sticker on the seat (unless it has peeled off) and may be stamped into the plastic shell. However, don’t confuse patent dates, which can also be molded into the plastic, with the date the individual safety seat was manufactured. For more information, go to Expiration date.

We have a Baby Trend infant seat and in our manuel ( the manufactures date is Jan 2009) it says they expire in six years and should not be used more then six years from the manufactures date.

I acutally had the same question today in re: 2nd hand Baby Trend car seat I received from a friend.  I called Baby Trend & they informed me that their car seats expire 6 yrs. after the date of manufacture. Example, the carseat I was given was manufactured 06/12/2008 (stamped on the bottom of carseat), so it expires on 06/12/2014.

Hope this helps :)
