How do I clean my washing machine?

I have a top load washing machine. We didn't use it for a few years and then brought it back to use. We've been using it for about a year now and didn't have any problems. Recently, I've noticed this black 0-ring of bacteria/mold/mildew/whatever near the top of the washer barrel. I can't seem to get it off. I've tried just scrubbing it down and running an empty load with bleach. Right now I'm letting bleach just sit without the washer running to see if that works. Honestly, it's just not healthy to wash my clothes in there.

How can I get the black stuff off? Thanks

use soft scrub for the mold, and to just regular clean a washer putting a cup of vinegar and baking soad in an empty washer and run it, onece a month, keeps it healthy:)
