Not sure about the books, but if you wash the clothes and use a few extra dryer sheets, that should take the smell out.

I would just wash them and if the smell doesn't come out I'd fabreeze them and then wash them. Fabreeze gets rid of smoke odors.

Ugh I HATE that smell! It seems to just attach to anything lol.. As for the clothes washing powder SHOULD get out the smell .. I always use Gain.. But I'm not sure about the books. That might be a little tougher, sorry!!

You can wash the clothes like normal, only throw in a/b half a cup of vinegar in the rinse cycle. This typically eliminates the smoke smell. You can also re-rinse in fabric softner to get rid of the vinger smell. :)

As for the cookbooks, throw them in the freezer for a few hours.

ETA: My grandma was a heavy smoker and my mom used vinegar to remove the smell/tar from stuff.
