What is the purpose of a God parent?

My Aunt just asked me if I would be the God Mother to her new baby. I have heard the term used loosely but she was talking about a ceremony so I think she is talking legitimately. Help please!

If something happens to her & the father, YOU would be responsible for her child, you would become the custodial gaurdian.... If done legally.

We use the term as the people that would take our kids if something were to happen to both of us.

For us it means having someone take over if something were to happen to my husband and I. We picked someone that is responsible and would be able to care for our girls they way we do now.

well it'd have to be in the Will for you to be the legal guardian, God parent ceremony in the church doesnt really mean anything i dont think other than an honorary title. I'm not into the whole church scene so i dont know? Google it. or ask you aunt for a more specific understanding of it
