How much is too much to be feeding my 3 week old son? Is 4 oz/3 hr too much?

No matter how much I feed my 3 week old son, he still seems hungry. When he wants to eat, he balls his fists up and sticks them in his mouth or he roots for my milk. We've been giving him 4 oz of Gerber Good Start Plus every 2.5-3 hours and sometimes it seems like that's not enough and he starts crying and stuffing his hands in his mouth or rooting again.

So my question is how much do babies around this age eat and is it hunger or could it be something else? I have a friend that has a baby that is 9 days older than our little guy and he is only eating 2-3 oz every 3-4 hours. I'm just worried that we're overfeeding our son. Any advice or ideas?

PS - I posted this in my babies group and someone mentioned that it may be gas or reflux issues. He passes gas quite a bit. She also said to hold the bottle so he has to drink it slow to avoid the gulp or the drown? Is that just supposed to be gulping or drowning or am I missing something? I never had these problems with DS #1.

Sounds about the amount I did with my kids, but all r different. It could be gas. I use to get them to byron after every ounce or two.

If that is how much he wants that is how much he needs.  He will only eat when hungry.

If the milk is coming out too fast try  and buy preemie nipples. they have them at babies r us. they are dr browns brand. if  the baby contunies to be fussy and gassy i would try him on SENSITIVE formula.  are you breastfeeding too? you say "my milk" so  idk if that means your breastfeeding lol. i dont want to assume and make you feel bad or anything

SOunds like a growth spurt.  The entire 1st 8 weeks or so is one long growth spurt.  Feed when hungry and it will pass.

my daughter is 14 days old and eats just about 4oz every 2 hrs lol, sometimes every 3-4 hrs...all depends. I had the same question cause at the hospital they told me to only feed her 2oz every 3-4 hrs and she was not having it! She's an eater and the dr said thats A-ok.

I am not so sure that the will only eat when they are hungry.  I know some people that were over feeding their infant.  When they finally took her to the doctor, he said if they had fed her any more her stomach could have burst.  I don't say this to scare you only for information.  It does sound like your little one is hungry.  If you are worried about it cut back by an ounce and see how that goes.
