Facts about Utah and polygamy

With a popular topic on here spreading some misinformation about the state I thought it best to clear it up in an area where everyone can see.

Utah was FORCED to make polygamy illegal in order to become a state.

Even after the LDS church denouncing the practice of polygamy they had to wait 6 years to get statehood status.

The federal government was adamant that polygamy NOT be practiced. They even passed the Morrill Anti-Bigamy Act, the Edmunds Act, and the Edmunds Tucker Act in an effort to try and shut down the LDS church in Utah.

Utah basically did not have a choice, if they wanted to become a state they HAD to make bigamy illegaly.
