At what age would you start an allowance and how much?

We started our son's at age 5. We made up a list of things that had to be done. Make bed, clean room things like that. They would get 2 dollars a week.
Sometimes they can do odd jobs for Grandpa and earn an extra dollar or too.
We are also teaching them about saving their money. They have to wait till they have reached at least $20.00 until they can spend it. Or with our oldest who is now 8 he will find something he really wants and then save up for it.
That's what we do.
