My children do not get pocket money (allowance)
We always get them sweet and most things they want
they have to odd jobs to get extra things like comics

but we pay for most things like clubs and outings

I never got an allowance. My parents didn't go for that . I may do it with my son but I'd probably start around the double digit age and maybe like only 5.00 or something. HHMMM don't know.

My son is only 4, yet he is very aware of money. People actually give him money all the time and it either goes in his bank account or his piggy banks, which are many and mostly full. He understands gift cards (loves them) and even credit cards. That why I wondered about the allowance thing, although I think he's much to young.

My son is 9yrs old and has a few chores in the house that help him to earn his allowance. He does get pocket allowance at the end of the week and if he's been really good about his chores he is allowed to save his money and put it towards a prize of his choice.

I give my 9 year old allowance about $3 a month..but she can loose it as well. I have been told to not give a child enough so that they can buy whatever they want when they want it, but to give them just enough that they learn they have to save up for something that they want. Fortunately, I have a very spend-thrifty daughter (she didn't get it from me) and really thinks about what she buys before she does and usually has more cash handy than I do. But, I also have her put $1 of every month's allowance into savings. Recently, her stepfather, bought her a DS game and she is "working" it off by doing projects with him. He figures he pays her minimum wage per hour of work so 1 hour = $5. She is actually anxious to help out and work off her debt to him.

My kids dont get an allowance per say but they can earn money.
They can do chores and earn money.  Most chores are a quarter a chore but we do have some $0.50 and $0.75 and one or two dollar chores.  If they want money for the ice cream man or anything for that matter they have to earn it.

My 10 year old son makes just enough to buy a snack in school
My 4 year old dd makes enough to go on at least one of those lil quarter rides a day.we have a ton in the neigborhood

My 8 year old daughter has enough for her school snack every day.  She also goes to the dollar store with me alot to pick up things like pencils that she wants, notebooks lil things like that.  But she also has a piggy bank and we counted it up last night $151.50     She's saving for college she dips in every now and again when she wants something

My kids (12 and 14) don't get an allowance. I didn't when I was a kid. I was raised to believe that children have chores that they do because that is part of their responsibility to their family. Although, my sister pays her children an allowance. I believe she gives them $15 a week each. Her kids are 10, 10 and 8. She also penalizes them should they damage their uniforms or household items or someone else's belongings. Her son is horrible for this. He usually run in a deficit!
My kids usually get things they ask for as long as I feel they are reasonable. We pay for activities and outings. They get money from relatives for holidays and birthdays and are free to use that any way they want. My daughter is frugal and can stretch a dollar. My son literally looses money so we try not to give him any. When they want something "extra" then they do have to do something "extra" around the house, like cleaning the dog pen or raking leaves.
They do help with our landscape business and they do get paid for that. That, however, is work, not chores.

I think that its up to you.  I think that if you child can understand the basic concept of money than I think that you should start giving them something.  I think that you should basis it on their age and how mature they are.  My daughter is 8 and understands the concept very well.  She knows that once she spends it all that it and that there is no more and no borrowing is allowed.  I give her like 20 dollars a month and if she spends it all in one day than she knows that thats it.  I think that  5 dollars a weeks is good enough for her right now.  But she also understands that she has choirs to do for that money because noone gets money for free.  Everyone has to do something for what they get.  She is only 8 and all of her choirs are done and done right she even does some of her borthers and that gives her extra money.

But thats just the way that it works in my house.

Hope that helps you.
