Police have arrested a South Carolina woman who they believe gave birth in a restroom during a circus performance at an arena and left the newborn boy in a toilet.

The baby was rescued by a janitor and is being treated in a hospital, where his condition is improving, officials said.

Jessica Blackham, 25, of Easley, was arrested this afternoon and charged with felony child abuse and unlawful neglect, according to WYFF, the NBC station in Greenville. If convicted, she could face up to 50 years in prison.

Greenville County Detention Center
Jessica Blackham, 25, is accused of giving birth in a restroom and leaving her newborn baby in a toilet.

Blackham is married and has a 4-year-old child, The Associated Press reported.

Police said they could not say what Blackham may have been thinking when she apparently gave birth Friday night in a ladies' room stall at the Bi-Lo Center in Greenville as some 10,000 people watched the circus in the arena area.

After the show, a custodian at the facility heard a whimpering sound and went to investigate, CNN reported. The worker found the baby in the water inside a toilet, and there was no sign of his mother.

The child, a white male weighing about 6 pounds, was taken to Greenville Memorial Hospital for treatment of hypothermia, the AP said.

He was initially listed in critical condition but had improved today to critical but stable condition, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Police Chief Terri Wilfong said this afternoon that the baby's prognosis is good.

Police said earlier that they had received several calls from people interested in adopting the baby. All inquiries were referred to the state Department of Social Services.

That is messed up.  I wonder if the mother has any history of psychological issues.
