Ideas???

Hey ladies, I was wondering if you could help me... I have to write a paper for my college English class. It's a causal analysis, so I have to pick an important or intriguing phenomenon or trend and speculate about why it might have occurred. I have to demonstrate that the event exists and argue for the plausibility of certain causes.

There are tons of ideas in my textbook, but they're all boring and overdone. I'm really into mysteries, like the Bermuda Triangle, aliens, ghosts, or pretty much anything weird. Can you guys come up with anything uber-exciting for my topic? Thanks a bunch! =)
