GREENVILLE, S.C. -- The woman believed to have given birth to a baby she abandoned in a toilet at the BI-LO Center in Greenville has been arrested, and two of her family members ended up handcuffed Tuesday after their angry confrontation with a WYFF 4 news crew.

Jessica Blackham

Tuesday afternoon, Greenville police arrested 24-year-old Jessica Blackham, of Easley. WYFF News 4 has learned that Blackham is married with a 4-year-old child. She is charged with felony child abuse and unlawful neglect. Police said that there is not enough evidence to call for an attempted murder charge at this point in the investigation

The condition of the newborn baby boy, who was suffering from hypothermia when a cleaning crew found him Friday night after a circus performance at the venue, is improving, according to South Carolina Department of Social Services officials.

Greenville police Sgt. Jason Rampey said the infant weighs about 6 pounds. The newborn is in critical condition at Greenville Memorial Hospital, but DSS officials said he is now considered stable.

When a WYFF 4 photojournalist tried to record video of the newborn's mother, sister and father arriving at the Law Enforcement Center, the sister and father became aggressive.

 Worker Finds Newborn, Calls 911

A 911 call made by a man working with the cleaning crew that found the newborn baby details the care he gave to the infant with the instruction of a Greenville dispatcher.

Dispatcher: EMS fire, what's the address of the emergency?

Caller: We found a newborn baby in a toilet. Can you please send an ambulance or something?

    Dispatcher: Is the baby breathing?

Caller: It's breathing. It's newborn. My supervisor take it off from the toilet already. We tried to clean the nose, but not much, we don't anything about it. You know?

Dispatcher: Do you have a blanket or anything like that on the baby?

Caller: We put a blanket already on the top

Dispatcher: OK. Make sure you keep the baby warm.

Dispatcher: Just make sure that they can gently wipe off the baby's mouth and nose. Dry the baby off with a clean towel, OK, or a cloth. Just keep the baby wrapped in a clean, dry cloth or towel.

Caller: OK. We're doing that right now.

Dispatcher: Make sure that you cover the baby's head, but not its face, OK.

The cleaning crew found the infant at about 11:30 Friday night, according to police.

The dispatcher instructed the man to tie a string around the newborn's umbilical cord.

Dispatcher: Now how's the baby doing?

    Caller: He's doing better.

Police said they found evidence that indicated the child was born in the bathroom Friday between 9:30 and 10:30 p.m.

accused of abandoning a newborn baby in a public toilet talked exclusively to WYFF News 4 Wednesday afternoon.

Raw Video: Thomas Blackham Interview

Thomas Blackman, who separated from his wife, 24-year-old Jessica Blackman last May, said that he thinks something is "mentally wrong" with her.

Jessica Blackham is charged with felony child abuse and unlawful neglect. Police said that she gave birth to a baby boy in a public bathroom and left him in a toilet. The newborn survived and is in critical but stable condition. She claims to have amnesia and said she doesn't remember giving birth. (Full Story)

A judge set bail for Blackham and she is expected to leave jail sometime Wednesday.

In an exclusive interview with WYFF News 4, Thomas Blackham talked about his marriage to Jessica Blackham and the birth of the baby at the BI-LO Center on Friday night.

Jessica Blackham

Thomas Blackham said he's been married to Jessica for five years.

Blackham said he doesn't believe that his wife was unaware she was pregnant. He also doesn't believe her claim that she blacked out and had amnesia during the baby's birth.

"She's been pulling this crap for years," Blackham said

He said he is not the father of the abandoned newborn, but feels badly for the baby. He said he hopes the boy ends up in a loving home.

Blackham said Jessica likes being a mother. He trusted her with their 4-year-old daughter, Katelyn. Blackham said he doesn't know where his daughter is. He said Greenville police told him Katelyn is in Department of Social Services custody, and now DSS is giving him the run around.

Blackham said he doesn't ever want to see Jessica again. He said he "hopes she rots in jail."

"I don't ever want her around Katelyn again alone," he said.

He said he believes something is mentally wrong with Jessica. He said in a recent conversation, Jessica told him that "aliens" were in her head telling her what to do, and if she didn't do what they said, they would abduct Katelyn.

Blackham said he tried to tell DSS and her family she needed help, but no one would listen.

She has a $10,000 surety bond on the neglect charge and $20,000 surety bond on the abuse charge. (Full Story On Arrest)

In court, Blackham told a judge that she has an idea of who father of the child is but doesn't know for sure. She said the father is not Thomas Blackham.

Jessica Blackham's mother told the judge that her husband was abusive when he got back from his year-long deployment in Iraq.
