School Tells 9-Year-Old to Remove Scarf, Citing Gang Attire

An elementary school in New Jersey told a 9-year-old student to remove her scarf because it could be "gang-related," MyFoxNY.com reports.

Vivienne Diaz, a third grader at Wantage Elementary School in Sussex, told the station that she’s been wearing the scarf on her head since the beginning of the school year, but that her teacher just recently brought up the issue.

Diaz reportedly said that she was approached by her teacher on Monday and was asked to roll it up because it "looks like a bandana and gangs wear bandanas."

The girl's parents said they were upset that a third grader attending a school in a rural farming community would be confronted in such a manner.

"Demographically, this is just absurd," said Ed Diaz, the girl’s father. "This is one step way beyond where the government wants to tell people what to let their children wear on their head."

Calls to the principal by MyFoxNY.com were not returned.
