I'm not quite sure how to word this so here goes.... I'm looking for a literary term for the set up that Mulan Rouge has where there is a story inside of the main story, that is telling the same story as the main story... I told you it didn't make any sense!!! Like in Mulan Rouge they have a play that's about the same exact thing as the plot to the movie.

Hmmmmmmmm, I don't know.  I was an English teacher for five years and don't know of a word for that.  I bet there is one though.  There is something similar in one of Shakespeare's plays, but it is not something that's very common, so I guess I have just never heard it called a certain thing.

A frame story can be a lot more than that.  A lot of times a frame story is the bigger story rather than the smaller one (if that makes sense), or it is a separate story that sort of "frames" a set of other, separate stories.

so the basic term is "story within a story" but in the case of moulin rouge its "a play within a film". no specific term
