Wildfire claimed 434 acres

NECHES — Officials now say a wildfire in northeastern Anderson County between Neches and Frankston affected more than 430 acres.

Alan Fox, law enforcement officer with the Texas Forest Service, told the Herald-Press Thursday that Monday’s wildfire centered near the intersection of FM 19 and CR 335 at Todd City consumed a total of 434 acres.

The wildfire did not claim any residences, but destroyed an unoccupied “deer camp trailer house,” according to Fox.

The forest service official said Monday’s fire was caused when a limb fell across a power line.

“It broke the line when it hit the ground and it sparked,” Fox said.

Firefighters continued to monitor the fire Thursday afternoon, he added.

“We had one catch out on it yesterday (Wednesday),” Fox said. “It burned about one acre.”

Monday’s large fire was not the only one keeping Texas Forest Service and area volunteer firefighters busy this week.

Firefighters battled three other wildfires in Anderson County Tuesday and Wednesday, according to Fox.

A fire of unknown origin, perhaps caused by logging equipment, took out 15 acres in the Frankston area off of CR 312. A second fire near the intersection of Texas 155 and CR 434 in northern Anderson County caused by a power line affected five acres, while firefighters fought a two-acre wildfire Tuesday morning in the Montalba area.

With consistent triple-digit temperatures and far below-average rainfall totals, Fox said trees are starting to lose moisture.

“Limbs will start dying and falling off,” potentially causing fires, he indicated. “...Right now we have large fires going in East Texas.”

According to the Texas Forest Service web site, there were seven “active” wildfires in the state as of late Thursday afternoon, with five of those in the general East Texas area (Bowie, Marion, Harrison, Cass, and San Augustine counties).

So sorry you all are dealing with that. We had that really bad fire here a couple months ago. Yeah,it's so hot, and no end in sight, makes the fires even worse. Praying you all are safe.

Yes, I'm in Lufkin. No, no rain here, we have actually broken a record for consecutive days over 100. NOT a record I'd like to have!
