(KMOV) -- Online, there are stories about young people who are trying a dangerous experiment to get drunk, fast. The idea is to soak a tampon in alcohol, then insert into the body (the vagina or anus).
It's thought to allow alcohol to soak into the system, quickly, because the alcohol doesn't have to be digested. It's also promoted as a way to avoid detection because the alcohol would not be smelled on the breath.
Pediatrician Kelly Ross of St Louis Children's Hospital says she hasn't seen any cases, locally. However, she says she's heard of the experiment.
"That's part of being a teenager is experimenting and pushing limits and trying to get away with things," said Dr. Ross.
Dr. Ross says the experiment is an extreme one. The alcohol-soaked tampon would burn on insertion.
"I can't imagine doing this all the time. It would really worry me that somebody was an alcoholic," said Dr. Ross.
Tampons are designed to hold liquid, not release it - so the desired effect of getting drunk may not happen. Even if someone could tolerate the pain, the health risks include alcohol poisoning and damage to sensitive tissues in private areas.
yuck!! I have heard about it but didn't realize all the risks. Obviously not something I would ever be willing to try, but personally I had no idea what these risks were. Maybe it should be included in sex ed..or drug abuse "classes"...i honestly have no idea how to get the word out to kids for this kind of stuff. haha But really, that's just sick.
never heard of this until TODAY! This is the second time. Gotta love the media for letting folks know! Makes me wonder if its not a new Urban legend!
