Before I start I will tell you I am already in the hospital with DS. So don't bash that I should go there. We came on tuesday night mostly because he wasn't eating or drinking and had a fever. I took him to the dr and that man is a quack. So we get in the ER and they tell me it's pnemonia after a chest Xray and blood work. They admit us mostly for not eating and drinking. They put him on a potassium cholride IV and ran some more test. They said his white count was high and that they are worried about that. Ok fast foward to the next morning and the Attending says that DS does NOT have pnemonia. That the ER doc though it was becoming that and wanted to treat it like it was for just in case reasons. Ok fine I am all about precautions. His fever started to go away and we were looking at possibly going home since he started eating and drinking. YAY. Well Thursday night his fever spiked 103.8. For one his fever is always high at night and for two we co sleep. He will not sleep in the hospital crib. It scares him to death. Understandable with every time he is in there they are poking him and bothering him. I explained that to the DR and she said that it's not normal for the fever. i told her my son runs high fevers for just the common cold. Teething he was running a 104 fever at night.

So the dr told me I don't know anything (speaking all her dr language) and told me they are keeping him now until the fever goes down. FINE. I want him tested for mono. He is showing all the signs like I did when I had it when I was 10. But no they won't test him.

Also he wasn't acting this sick till they stuck him with the IV with the potassium chloride.

Could it be that he is having a reaction to the IV fluids? He was bouncing all over the ER after they gave him just plain fluids. He was my lil boy again and now it's like he's a lymp feverish doll???

Should I go to a diff hospital??

He is in a childrens hospital. No one is telling me anything. Just that it is a virus and they can't tell where it's coming from. They gave him antibiotics. They will not test for mono because "kids this age do not get Mono"

DS is 2

For the people saying let the antibiotics kick in, he's been on 3 different kinds since last wednesday.

ok I went off. I told the dr I want to talk to someone else and expressed my concerns and anger. They are going to so more blood work and they had a specialist come in and look at him. He is baffled as to what is wrong. He said there is something there and he will find it for me. they are going to check for mono after I told them that it would make me feel better and they are also going to take his IV off and see what happens. If he doesn't bounce back by 4pm they are putting him back on the IV.

Antibiotics since the 23rd of last month

Ok they came and did an echo and an ekg plus some blood work. They ruled out kawasaki thankfully. They are testing him for mono and some other stuff. Poor baby lost 5 viels of blood. But he will be ok. He was running a 103.8 fever but they gave him motrin and I gave him a bath and now he's down to normal. He is still sleepy and won't eat but than again I don't blame him. They upped his fluids. Depending on the results they are sending us home if there is nothing they can do with meds. They just want to make sure his fever is under control. He was active before and brightened up a lil bit when we oovoo'd with my oldest today. ODS even got him to eat some fries and ice cream (yea I know not a good mix but they are his favs and at this point I don't care what he eats as long as he eats something. If the big fevers continue tonight they are going to do another chest xray to make sure that there is nothing in his chest forming. On the funny side the infectious disease dr came in and told me all about my son's extra rib and how he will never have a wife because that extra rib is supposed to be in his soulmate.

To the people that said to jsut let them do their jobs... I was told that if I didn't go off on them that they were going to send me home without checking for anything else. Good thing I opened my mouth!

He wont sleep in the crib lol he stole my recliner

i am going to bed. I will update in the morning. thanks everyone for the prayers and well wishes

He did great last night. they gave him motrin for his fever and it was down all night. He woke up this morning with a 101.4 fever which is a lot better than the 103+ that he's been having.

I am aware that kids can tolerate high fevers. he gets high fevers every time he gets sick. What a child CAN NOT tolerate is a 104+ fever for 11 days. NOT NORMAL.

The Dr just came in and told me that almost all the labs are back and so far everything is looking good except that his platelet count is going up. His white count is 11.1. Slightly elevated so that's a lot better than it was before. We are still waiting for some of the tests to come back. I pray to god we can go home soon. Lil man needs to be home so he can run around. The hospital is draining him and I hate it.

he's become very weak and now has to be force fed. I hate doing it but he needs energy. They took out the IV because it backed up into his hand and now it's super swollen. My mother came over before and we worked him out. made him walk back and forth than around the floor. I don't know how much more I can take with him being sick. He keeps going cross eyed and that is freaking me out more than anything. It's like he's giving up and dying. I will not let that happen. I really want to go home to my oldest and hug and kiss him. Oovoo is not enough. Please pray and pray hard for my baby. I'm not that religious. I do believe in a high power whether it's god or something else. I haven't stopped crying. the Dr's still have no clue what it is. They are thinking that is one virus after another.

OMG OMG OMG. THEY TOOK OUT THE IV BECAUSE IT STARTED TO BACK WASH. THEY DECIDED TO KEEP IT OUT AND i SWAER INSTANTLY  HE CHANGED. hE BECAME jACOB AGAIN. hE STARTED BOUNCING ALL OVERTHE ROOM AND DRINKING. mY MOM WAS HERE SO I RAN TO THE GIFT SHOP AND GOT HIM A BALLOON AND A MOTORCYCLE AND THAT'S IT HE IS BACK!!! OMG OMG OMG. I PRAY THAT HE IS THE SAME IN THE MORNING AND WE CAN GO HOME. YAY

12/5/2011

So last night was ok. He didn't run a fever all night and was drinking his juice more. Even had a couple munchkins that my mother brought for him. This morning he woke up with a slight fever and is a little weak again. I really don't want the IV back in him.  He's sleeping right now. I am going to try and get him to eat breakfast and go from there. I am waiting for the Dr to come and see him. If anything I will be transforing out of here. The nurse we had last night was a real jerk. I called him for water and towels for bath because they don't let us in the cabinets and he told me he wasn't a maid. I have already talked to the nurse in charge about him. I hope today i can get him up and moving more and out of here.

him last night playing with his balloon and than this is him now

this sucks!

We are home! He is doing better. Even played with some toys for a little before taking another nap. I opened one of the christmas gifts early and let him and his brother have it because i knew it would get him up and moving. He is still sleeping like crazy but is eating a little more and drinking a little more every time. So that is good. YAY I can't wait till my lil man is himself again!!

Not an RN yet, but.......

they did blood draw before the IV, correct? I am assuming they gave him regular IV then switched him to the Potassium IV? If his levels were low, that is why they switched it but mind you the potassium is the only real difference there (i think)

As for telling it was one thing and it turn out not, they do that, esp. when they do not know what it is just yet. As long as his fever keeps going back down, (I know and back up) I would stay there until at least tomorrow. Let them try to figure it out for him. Poor boy!  from the WBC and his fevers, he has an infection somewhere momma.
