I rarely post anything here.. but I thought this would be a GREAT conversation starter...

http://www.wtsp.com/news/topstories/article/236744/250/No-food-stamps-for-junk-food?hpt=us_bn5

The bill gives this list of off-limits foods, but says the restrictions should not be limited to just these items:

  • Foods containing trans fats
  • Sweetened beverages, including sodas
  • Jell-O
  • Candy
  • Ice cream
  • Pudding
  • Popsicles
  • Muffins
  • Sweet rolls
  • Cakes
  • Cupcakes
  • Pies
  • Cobblers
  • Pastries
  • Doughnuts
  • Corn-based salty snacks
  • Pretzels
  • Party mix
  • Popcorn
  • Potato chips

So.... discuss...

ill bite, I agree... I think if the GOVERNMENT is giving you food, then it needs to be HEALTHY foods. if you want chips & soda, buy them with your own money!

(I also think processed frozen foods should be added to that list)

This has been done.  Bottom line is this. IF they want to pass this law they can. They are providing the stamps, they can set the rules.  They could say no meat over 2.99 per pound. Al perfectly legal.

Add to that any processed boxed, canned, frozen, or fresh food and we're good to go. That is all junk food as well.

Then you'll have people bitching because people on FS are getting fresh produce and meats when they can't afford it for their family.

No one will ever win. I personally feel like everyone should fuck off and keep their business to themselves and out of other's pantries and fridges.

I think the govt is really trying to kill everyone in the world anyway so it doesn't matter what we eat lmao

Minus the frozen food comment. When we were really tight on money, the only thing I would bring to work for lunch were $.50 frozen burritos bc they were the cheapest, most filling food I could find. :)

Too much control. How soon before they ban flour so you don't fry foods? Or sugar and butter so you can't make cake from scratch, which imo are much better. Boxed cake gets no love in my house. I maintain that the effort going into controlling what people eat would be better invested elsewhere.

Yes, in exchange for the government giving you extra money, you are supposed to take an hour to cook a healthy meal for your child for dinner.  What a novel idea.
