Okay, we really need a reliable vehicle. I just got my tax return which was a total of 4600. I will have to take off work 2 months this summer when I have the baby. We should be ok financially with just df's income but I still want some cushion so I don't want to spend all of the tax return on a car.

I am currently contemplating 3 options.

#1: Buy a cheap vehicle for 2K or so and save the rest.

#2: Use all of the tax return and buy a car outright.

#3: Put 1-2K down on a 6K or less car and have a car payment.

What would you do?

I'm having a very hard time finding anything decent for 1-2K. Most of them have some issue that needs to be fixed immediately. I don't want a junker, I already have one of those. lol

No on option one!!!!!!!
You will more than likely spend more in repairs of the car than the price you pay buying it.
Option 2 will leave you with no safety net
Option 3 is only a good idea if you KNOW you can swing a car note.

my car and van were both bought cash. Ive had my van 7 years this month and it's had to have a radiator and upper intake gasket fixed, thats it. Ive had my car almost 4 years and it's had to have a water pump. I hate car payments. My DH is a mechanic so anything that goes bad he can fix. I had a car payment once and hated it
